The Darwin Rebellion: the genesis of redressing institutional failure By Robyn Smith.

The centenary of the Darwin Rebellion passed on 17 December 2018 without any official recognition by the Northern Territory Government or City of Darwin. It is doubtful the Federal Government dignified the occasion, which ended in something of a humiliation for its first Administrator, Dr John Anderson Gilruth. The centenary was observed by a small group of Top End locals, headed by Jack Ellis, Patrick McIntyre and Bruce Honeywell, which gathered at the former Reserve Bank on Bennett Street and marched, bearing their grievances on placards, to Liberty Square on 16 December 2018. On this occasion, there was no Cable Guard or police presence, nor any special constables, but there was—in an exquisite irony—a security guard from Parliament House lurking nearby to serve a trespass notice on the rowdy re-enactors; he retreated when former Administrator the Honourable Austin Asche AC QC approached to join the assembled rabble.
