The Darwin Rebellion chapter explores a Darwin event that captured the attention of the nation. The rebellion was the result of unemployment and economic distress that dominated Darwin at the time. The chapter details additional resources that can be searched and sites around Darwin that can be visited. It also explores the dominant and conflicting personalities of the union leader, Harold Nelson and Administrator Gilruth who occupied centre stage.
The Historical Society of the Northern Territory acknowledges the Larrakia people, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which History House stands, and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, sea, and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
