George Woodroffe Goyder and the surveying expedition to Port Darwin in 1869 are the main focus of this chapter. There are biographical details of Goyder and also a discussion of the life and work of a surveyor at the time. As well as the town plan for Palmerston(Darwin) the chapter covers the other townships about Port Darwin that the expedition planned. There are also details of the not always harmonious relations between the surveyors and the Larrakia people.
The Historical Society of the Northern Territory acknowledges the Larrakia people, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which History House stands, and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, sea, and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
