This is a wide ranging chapter on the various illnesses that settling the Northern Territory has produced; influenza, malaria and venereal disease for example. Aboriginal people were particularly vulnerable to these introduced diseases. Leprosy is a particular focus of the chapter with a history of the hospitals and treatments that have largely eliminated this disease. Biographic details of some of the main medical men, (at that time they were always men) are also provided.
The Historical Society of the Northern Territory acknowledges the Larrakia people, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which History House stands, and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, sea, and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
