Earl was commissioned to find out what remained of the Overland Telegraph Line between Katherine and Alice Springs. The National Trust intended to have the Line declared a 'heritage trail' but it was unknown what was left of it. In 1984, Earl and Wendy undertook the quest with Wendy's diary account included in the book.
