A biography of Pietro Baracchi, engineer and astronomer, who, together with colleagues, accurately determined the longitude of Port Darwin in 1883 by use of telegraph signals on the undersea cable to Indonesia and Singapore. The biography includes details of his visit to Darwin and his subsequent distinguished career as an astronomer in Melbourne.
