A detailed history of the construction of the line in 1872 under the direction of Charles Todd that followed the route discovered by John McDouall Stuart a decade earlier. Also constructed were a series of repeater stations between Darwin and Port Augusta. There was a major upgrade by the military in 1938. Broadband microwave technology and then broadband coaxial cables replaced the line in the 1970s.
The Historical Society of the Northern Territory acknowledges the Larrakia people, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which History House stands, and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, sea, and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
