A square next to Parliament House important to Darwin’s history. Named to commemorate the Darwin rebellion in 1919 and also containing a memorial cairn for the sub-sea cable and a plinth commemorating the scientific work of Pietro Baracchi and colleagues who in 1883 established the longitude of Darwin. The square holds a venerable Banyan tree important to the Larrakia people.
The Historical Society of the Northern Territory acknowledges the Larrakia people, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which History House stands, and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, sea, and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
