A detailed biography of John Gilruth veterinary surgeon and Administrator. Schooled in Scotland, educated in veterinary science in London then several years as Government veterinary surgeon in New Zealand before joining the University of Melbourne. Appointed to the Commonwealth scientific expedition to the Northern Territory in 1911, he was then appointed Administrator for the NT in 1912. This proved a turbulent post for him and he was recalled. He went on to a distinguished scientific career with the CSIRO.
The Historical Society of the Northern Territory acknowledges the Larrakia people, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which History House stands, and acknowledges their continuing connection to land, sea, and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
